When we’re chasing a dream, it is easy, too easy, I think, to spend so much time looking ahead—that we forget what is right in front of us. It’s a daily battle of the heart, to savor and appreciate what is–while still moving toward what could be.
Somehow, we need eyes of grace to see…and appreciate…and cherish the little things, the small steps, the oft-unnoticed daily gifts that quietly line our path.
But at the same time, we have to guard against becoming complacent, fighting the pull to settle in and get comfy, becoming weary of the journey and deciding to stay right where we are. We go stagnant, until suddenly, in the middle of another sleepless night, the dream whispers our name, calling us to get up and get moving again. For if we stop moving forward, how will we ever reach our destination?
Maybe part of the answer lies in recognizing that happiness never comes from a destination. Happiness is a choice we make, every day, no matter where we are. It comes from recognizing that circumstances don’t bring happiness, things don’t bring happiness, achievements don’t bring happiness.
Happiness comes from inside us, from an attitude of thanksgiving. It flows out of hope, knowing we stand on an unshakeable foundation of faith in God. And it comes from paying attention, from treasuring the people, the creative gifts and the relationships we have been blessed with today.
If we get too focused on tomorrow, we can fall into a dangerous trap. I love the way Dr. Robert Holden describes it:
“Beware of Destination Addiction – a preoccupation with the idea that happiness is in the next place, the next job, and with the next partner. Until you give up the idea that happiness is someplace else, it will never be where you are.”
Cherish today–while still looking forward to tomorrow.
Enjoy every step of the journey.
Including the one that brought you to today.
Thanks for this, Connie. Each day brings its own blessings.
Thanks, Jan. You are right. Sometimes, we just need to stop and be grateful for today, this moment. 🙂
