How to Stay Positive in a World that Makes No Sense - Connie Mann

I haven’t written a blog post in several weeks. I wanted to, but every time I sat down to write something, I came up empty. My heart was too heavy and overwhelmed. What I could possibly say to encourage you in the midst of all the horrible things happening in our world right now?

I had to stop watching the news, because my heart was numb. I wish there was a way to erase the images I accidentally saw that now play over and over when I close my eyes.

I am not a nurse or doctor, but I considered going back to school so I could help fight the deadly Ebola outbreak. I’m not a soldier who can fight terrorists so my inability to stop this madness made me cry and rage at the same time. I am not a millionaire who can feed all the hungry and rebuild the homes and communities destroyed by earthquakes, hurricanes and floods.

So what can you and I do? Where do we fit in the midst of such tragedy? How do we stay positive and even, make a difference in a world that makes no sense?

I have no trite answers, no quick fixes, because there aren’t any. But I have found a few things that help me move forward.

  • Find the Positives – Even in the midst of the horror and heartbreak, there are stories of hope and of heroes, stories that remind us that not everyone is evil and that tragedy is not all there is. Look for those stories. Celebrate them.
  • Light a Candle – Darkness hates the light. We can speak up and speak out and expose evil. And for those of us who believe in Jesus Christ, the light of the world, we can stand in that light and help point others to that hope.
  • Focus on what you can do — For a long time, I saw so many needs I got overwhelmed and didn’t know where to start, how to help. Finally, I realized that each of us can make a difference in small ways, in doing little things to help in our sphere of influence.

Take time to encourage a friend, family member, or co-worker. Help a charity around the corner or halfway around the world. For me, this means being a consultant for Seeds of Blessing, which is helping women artisans in developing countries break the cycle of poverty. Check out this short video about Seeds of Blessing (Or, if you’d like to purchase a basket, host a show, become a consultant or just get more info, please stop by www.connie.seedsofblessing.com )

I’ve also gotten involved with the School in a Cart in the Philippines, which is helping poor children get an education, so they, too, can break the poverty cycle. (For more on the School in a Cart, visit www.Lift-the-Lid.org).

I can’t change the world, but maybe, I can encourage those around me in small ways. I can offer hope. If we all do that, if we all shine a light in our little corner of the world, together, we can make a difference. Won’t you join me?
